Q: What is BASSET and what does it mean?
A: BASSET stands for Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training. The Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) is the licensing and regulatory authority for all seller/server training programs in the State of Illinois. The Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) licenses, approves and administers seller/server training programs that are recognized as a BASSET approved program. Cosaint Alliance Consulting & Training Services, Inc. is a State of Illinois License provider.
Q: What will I learn in a BASSET class?
A: Prevention/intervention strategies and age-verification techniques. Participants will know how to recognize when a patron is intoxicated and has been over served. Servers will be taught behavioral cues and signs to spot when someone is intoxicated, and will be taught what to say and how to handle discontinuing service to an intoxicated patron. Training program properly instructs sellers/servers age-verification techniques, which can deter underage sales and service.
Q: What are the objectives of the BASSET Program?
A: The objectives of the BASSET program are to adequately train and educate sellers and servers to serve alcohol responsibly. By properly training the alcoholic beverage industry through BASSET programs, the number of drunk driving fatalities could decrease, and can reduce sales and service to minors. Ultimately, seller/server training will keep liquor establishments and communities safer.
Q: Is BASSET training mandatory?
A: As of July 1, 2018 all on-premise alcohol servers (and those required to check identification for alcohol service) are mandated to be BASSET certified.
Q: What is the required length of a BASSET class?
A: For on-premise establishments (bars, restaurants, taverns, gaming lounges, night clubs, and banquet halls) BASSET training is 4 hours long. For off-premise establishments (grocery stores, convenient stores, gas stations, and liquor stores) training must be at least 3 hours in length.
Q: How much does BASSET training cost?
A: $25.00 per participant, group discount rates available. Inquire directly at lmj@cosaintalliance.com or call (815) 714-2450.
Q: How long is certification good for and do I have to be recertified?
A: As of July 1, 2015, BASSET certification cards are good for three (3) years for the date of issuance.
For example, a BASSET cardholder who was certified on May 15, 2014 would need to renew by May 15, 2017.
Q: How can I receive a BASSET card replacement/reprint (lost, name change, etc.)?
A: Email BASSET provider at lmj@cosaintalliance.com or call (815) 714-2450 to request your Student ID # issued at class attended. DO NOT contact ILCC directly, this request must be made directly through BASSET provider. Those trained by a BASSET-approved provider since May 2015 can print their own card via the BASSET Card Lookup web feature, however Student ID # issued by provider is required.
Q: How and when will I receive my BASSET card/certificate?
A: BASSET provider will submit a class roster within 24 hrs. of class attended to the ILCC who will grant state-issued BASSET cards to participants. It is prerogative of the licensed BASSET provider, participant, or employer to request where they want their state-issued card sent.
*NOTE – Participants should always provide their employer (establishment) with a copy of their certificate. Employers (establishments) are STRONGLY encouraged to keep a copy on file in their office of ALL employees BASSET certifications.
Q: Can I take the training online?
A: There are other online training programs, however some Illinois municipalities may not accept online programs. Check with your local ordinances first. It is recommended to enroll in live in-person training the first time taking a BASSET course.
*Currently, we only offer live in-person training.
